Musique pour douze instruments
Initially conceived as a kind of chamber symphony in several movements, this piece eventually takes the form of a single piece. Its formal course can be summed up as follows: after the exposition of two related ideas (the first one stated first by the violin, the second by the piano), a percussion solo introduces a broad development exploiting these thematic ideas in an incessant variation, both lyrical and voluble. I have since taken up the same formal proportions more than once (Nuit, Processions) for their dramaturgical potential.
Written in Catalonia between December 1994 and May 1995, revised in 2021 for the Musiques Nouvelles ensemble, this Music for twelve instruments, dedicated to Serge Nigg, won first prize in the Boston Alea III competition in 1997.
